Building new T-pylons
We started construction work needed to build the new overhead connection, featuring T-pylons, from Sandford to Avonmouth in May 2021.
Balfour Beatty is the principal contractor for this work. One of our first tasks to build the new temporary road accesses into our construction areas is progressing well, with over half complete.
We’re continuing to build the remaining road accesses and, in the areas, where these are complete, we’re building the connecting construction haul road and preparing the work areas where we will be constructing each of the new pylons.
To keep everyone safe while we work on the highways, we need to put up temporary traffic lights, restrict parking and close some roads for a short time. We’ll put up advance notice signs to let local road users know of any roadworks and traffic management in the area.
We expect to start piling in August and we’ll continue into 2022. This activity involves putting concrete and steel piles into the ground.
Nearby residents may hear noise and feel vibrations during this work. This will depend on how close you are to the site and the ground conditions and wind direction. We are sorry if this causes any disturbance.
To help reduce disruption, we will not carry out piling over the weekends and we will limit piling to between the hours of 8am and 5pm. The hydraulic hammer is the most silenced on the market and the piling rig has been designed to minimise noise and vibrations. We expect the piling at each site to take approximately one week and we publish a monthly schedule to show where we are carrying out this work.
