About us

Who we are and what we do

National Grid is a regulated business, responsible for managing the high-voltage electricity transmission system in England and Wales.

We are at the heart of one of the greatest challenges facing our society: supporting the creation of new sustainable energy solutions for the future and developing systems that can underpin our economic prosperity.

We are in charge of connecting electricity generators to the national grid, transporting electricity efficiently, reliably and safely around the country, and also balancing electricity supply and demand on a minute-by-minute basis, to keep the nation’s lights on.
